27 WEEKENDSPORT Friday, August 28, 2026 | Gippsland Weekend Gippsland Lakes Yacht Club's (GLYC) Division Cool participants enjoyed another chilled out session in balmy early spring weather with blue skies and light winds last Sunday. The group of enthusiastic sailors set off from Paynesville on an odyssey cruise across Lake Victoria. With hardly another boat on the Lakes, the sailors made themselves as comfortable as possible in their various dinghies, soaking up the sunshine, making a bee line for Sperm Whale Head. On arrival, they were greeted by the coach's game of collecting the plastic balls distributed on the water earlier and exchanging the balls for chocolate, chips and a drink. Some of the Division Cool participants are looking to purchase their own boat - in particular Sabres. Anyone interested in selling their Sabre please contact the GLYC. Spring sunshine for Division Cool Plenty of fun last week at the Gippsland Lakes Yacht Club’s Division Cool, who sailed across Lake Victoria. (PS) The Division Cool sessions continues weekly on Sunday mornings and members are welcome to join in the training sessions with great coaches. (PS) Reigning Bairnsdale Cricket Association "A" grade premier, Wy Yung officially kicked off training recently in stunning conditions. The development group did some work on decision making and running between the wickets before joining the main group. Warm up games were noughts and crosses, won by the white ball team, who were also successful in the relay race. Cricket tennis was popular, the ball machine was in action while others joined in a hitting the gaps batting activity, while some video analysis of a couple of the young seamers proved worthwhile. The club was delighted to get 17 players attending, showing a great attitude for a fun and purposeful session. The club has finalised its leaders for the coming season, with Steve Bertino in charge of the firsts, Sean Phillipson the seconds and Pat Roberts the thirds. The Wy Yung Cricket Club completed its first training session for the season on Sunday, as the club looks to start another successful campaign. (PS) Wy Yung kicks off pre-season The Metung Yacht Club (MYC) held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) last Saturday afternoon. A small but interested group of members (and some proxies) voted on the AGM business and welcomed the new general committee - commodore Peter Kanat, vice commodore Stephen Bull, rear rommodore Mary Rowe, honorary secretary Andrew Lethlean, honorary treasurer Michael Hack, and Bill Newcomen, Andrew Perkins and Fred Haes. MYC member Derek Russell adjudicated the election of the commodore, and Peter Kanat, Andrew Lethlean and Bill Newcomen presented the business of the AGM. The reports to the AGM are available for perusal on the MYC website and highlights of those reports will be shared on MYC social media.
