15 Friday, August 28, 2026| Gippsland Weekend Women’s 7th-11th september 2026 W Health Week Learn Bowen Thera py Those looking to transition into the healthcare sector or expand their existing bodywork skills will have an opportunity to train in a renowned Australian soft-tissue therapy this spring. Wyrd Bowen is hosting a five-day intensive Level I Bowen Therapy training in East Gippsland from October 30 to November 3, 2026. Led by veteran soft-tissue therapist Nicole Becker, the program is designed to take beginners from foundational concepts to practical, hands-on application. Bowen Therapy was originally developed by Tom Bowen in Geelong, Victoria. Unlike many traditional massage techniques, Bowen is a gentle, oil-free modality that uses precise, non-invasive movements across muscles and connective tissue to stimulate the body's self-healing mechanisms. Because the pressure is minimal, the therapy is easy on the practitioner's body while offering long-lasting relief to the client. Additionally, the treatment is highly versatile as it can be performed through light clothing. The upcoming Level I training aims to equip students with the skills to address an estimated 80 per cent of common presenting physical complaints, including lower and upper back pain, sacral issues, hamstring tightness, neck stiffness, and joint mobility restrictions. In addition to physical manual techniques, the curriculum incorporates kinesiology testing to identify problems and measure treatment success. It also introduces energetic concepts, referred to by the program as "wyrding," which explore how to interact with the human nervous system on both physical and energetic levels. For many, training in Bowen Therapy offers a viable pathway to self-employment, a flexible side income, or a rewarding career change. "Step into your sovereignty by being of service to others," trainer, Nicole Becker said, who has operated as a self-employed therapist since 1998 and has been instructing practitioners since 2020. Ms Becker noted the skill set is highly flexible, allowing practitioners to build parttime home-based businesses, integrate touch therapy into corporate environments, or specialise in fields like sports performance, paediatric care, and elderly mobility. The five-day course represents the final Wyrd Bowen training scheduled for the East Gippsland region in 2026. Dates: Friday, October 30 – Tuesday, November 3, 2026 Tuition: $2500 (An early bird rate of $2200 is available for registrations paid in full before September 30, 2026) What's included: A 19-page physical training manual, a certificate of completion, ongoing informal post-training support from Becker, and a 50 per cent discount on future Level 1 refresher courses. Bonuses: Registrations submitted this month include a complimentary personal Bowen treatment session with Ms Becker (valued at $140) and a guided self-healing meditation script to use with future clients. There are no formal prerequisites to enrol, as the course is constructed to accommodate complete beginners. However, prospective students must complete an application interview to ensure they are a suitable fit for the intensive format. Soft-tissue therapist Nicole Becker is bringing a five-day Leven I Bowen Therapy course to East Gippsland this spring. Women are often very good at looking after everyone else. Work, family, appointments and everyday life can quickly fill the calendar, while our own preventative health checks are quietly pushed further down the list. This Women's Health Week, Bairnsdale Regional Health Service (BRHS) is encouraging women across East Gippsland to take a moment to think about their own health, including whether they are up to date with cervical screening. Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers, and cervical screening is one of the most effective ways of protecting against it. A Cervical Screening Test looks for human papillomavirus (HPV), a very common virus that causes almost all cervical cancers. Under the National Cervical Screening Program, women and people with a cervix aged 25 to 74 who have ever been sexually active are generally recommended to have a Cervical Screening Test every five years. BRHS Women's and Sexual Health Nurse Heather Daly said it was an important health check that could easily be forgotten or postponed. "Life gets busy and it can be very easy for preventative health appointments to fall down the list," Heather said. Make time for health checks "If you are due, overdue or simply aren't sure when you last had a Cervical Screening Test, we encourage you to have the conversation and make an appointment." For people who may feel uncomfortable about having a clinician collect their sample, self-collection is also available. You still need to see a nurse to arrange the test, answer the required screening questions and ensure your results are followed up appropriately, but the sample itself can be collected privately. Heather said that conversation with a women's health nurse could sometimes provide an opportunity to address other concerns as well. Recently, a woman came to BRHS's Ross Street Clinic expecting simply to collect a self-collection kit. Instead, she met with Heather, completed the screening process at the clinic and was also able to discuss some other health concerns. "She told me afterwards that she was so pleased she had seen me rather than simply being handed a kit, because it gave her the opportunity to talk about some other issues and be directed back to her GP for further management," Heather said. It is an important reminder that the BRHS Cervical Screening and Women's Health Clinic is about more than a single test. Women can also attend the clinic for women's health information, advice and support, helping connect them with appropriate care when something doesn't feel right or they simply have questions about their health. "Sometimes making that first appointment is the hardest part," Heather said. "But looking after your own health is important, and we're here to make that conversation as comfortable and straightforward as possible." Call 5152 0131 for more information. # # " " # " # !
